Brief

Vui Hội Làng – a mobile game that brings the cultural richness of Vietnamese traditional folk games to a modern audience. By allowing players to role-play as a good citizen who help to upgrade and modernize traditional villages across Vietnam. Through tasks, mini-games, and collaborative efforts, players can experience the charm of Vietnam’s cultural heritage while participating in community building. Our game aims to preserve and revitalize traditional customs while appealing to a tech-savvy, game-loving generation.

Challenges:
The cultural values and traditional significance of folk games are gradually being lost, as Vietnamese youth face limited opportunities to access and participate in them. The challenge lies in preserving and revitalizing these games in a way that resonates with modern society, ensuring their continuity and appeal to the younger generation.

Solution:

  • Digitalize Vietnam traditional games to encourage young Vietnamese play Vietnam traditional games frequently, socialize with others, and explore Vietnam culture along the way.
  • Build an interesting and seamless storyline.
  • Integrate multiplayers mode into the mobile game to encourage players invite, play, and interact with their friends and relatives.

Traditional cultural identities are important values of a nation. In Vietnam, some cultures are gradually being forgotten, including Folk Games that are less popular in Vietnamese people’s lives. Especially, for today’s young people who are progressively forgetting or not knowing about Folk Games.

Therefore, we began to research by finding out the reasons why folk games are increasingly “mai một” and interviews with users to get to know the target groups to understand their behaviors, pain points, and expectations for a product that helps them not forget folk games.

Homepage

The Homepage of Vui Hội Làng recreates the atmosphere of a traditional Vietnamese village with familiar locations such as the Village Hall, Village Gate, the Elder’s House, and the Banyan Tree. Players can explore, complete quests, manage resources, and interact with characters across different areas. The toolbar on the right provides features like server switching, friend management, leaderboards, and a shop, making navigation easy. The bright and lively interface offers a familiar, culturally rich experience inspired by Vietnamese folk traditions.


Game description

On the game description screen, the app seamlessly integrates information about the origin, history, and cultural significance of the folk game, along with instructions for both real-life play and in-game participation. Before starting, players are informed about the energy cost and the exciting rewards they can earn, enhancing motivation and engagement. Additionally, users can choose to play solo or with friends, fostering interactive experiences and stronger connections within the game.


Lobby and Leaderboard

These screens provide interactive spaces for players to connect within the game.
In the Lobby: Players can invite friends, find online users, and start games together, using microphone, speaker, and chat features to enhance interaction and connection.
On the Leaderboard: It shows player rankings across Northern, Central, and Southern servers, allowing players to track scores, compete, and improve.

The “Vui Hội Làng” project shows the dedication and teamwork of our group, leading to important lessons and great achievements:

  • We earned second place at the 2024 Lollypop Designathon after 24 hours of focused effort.
  • We applied the Design Thinking process to deeply understand and solve user problems, while also considering business factors to ensure the solution’s sustainable development.
  • The competition inspired us to reflect on the role of young people in preserving national culture, making us realize the importance of safeguarding traditional values.
  • It provided an opportunity for effective teamwork and collaboration.
  • Although the content introducing folk games lacked some appeal, the judges saw great potential for further development.
  • Moving forward, we plan to improve character development, storytelling, and the user experience.
